Chapter Twelve
âAre you really for real?â Avery asked, eyes wide.
âYes,â Joss said for the third time. Sheâd told Avery about the job offer at the diner, and for some reason, Avery was incredulous.
âDo you think Iâd be good at it?â
Joss had never been a good liar. âI donât know. Itâs not easy. Itâs fast-paced, and people can be really hard to deal with sometimes. You have to be nice all the time, no matter what.â
âI can do that.â Avery nodded. âI know itâs not supposed to be about the money, but it seems like you do okay there, right?â
âI do, but Iâve worked there for a very long time. Everyone knows me. I made a promise to myself many years ago that if I met a new customer, Iâd make friends with them. I wanted them to want to come back to see me.â
âDid it work?â Avery asked.
âStill does. I donât like to toot my own horn or anything, but itâs true. I have people request to sit in my section all the time. Thatâs why I do well. I really try hard.â
âI want to have that, too. Iâm really excited, Joss. Thank you.â
Joss wasnât so sure about how things would play out, but she was excited to tell her sister the news. She was happy that Avery was excited and hoped that it meant good things for both of them.
âItâs been a while since Iâve enjoyed a job. Iâm not trying to be like you or follow in your footsteps or anything. I hope you know that.â Avery worried.
âItâs important to enjoy what you do. Iâd be lying if I said I liked it a hundred percent of the time, but for the most part, Iâm happy. I think itâs fun and rewarding, which might sound silly.â Joss blushed.
âItâs not silly. I made a ton of money in marketing. I was darn good at it, and I hated every last second of it. When I saw how happy you were here, I was flooded with emotion. I left Lemon Bay for bigger and better things, and they were bigger, but definitely not better. Iâm really happy to be back. Thank you again, I owe you.â
âYou donât owe me anything. Donât go into it thinking like that. I provided you an opportunity, but youâre the one deciding to take it. Make it worth it, and youâll only have yourself to thank.â
âArenât you philosophical todayâ¦â Avery teased, stifling her laughter.
âIs it weird that I missed you?â Joss asked.
âKinda,â Avery admitted. âI havenât given you much reason to.â
That was true. Avery was hard to love and knew it. Joss, though, had to admit that she never really tried very hard.
âYouâre my sister. You lost someone you loved, and it made me realize how quick something like that can happen. I donât want us to lose touch again.â
âNow youâre emotional.â Avery smirked. âListen, when Dash was killed, it nearly killed me. If you werenât there in the way you were, embracing me back
